Classic Adventures

  1. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
The first POTC film was one of those movies that everyone expected to be a gimmick-filled failure and turned out to be one of the most successful and influential franchises of the early 21st century. This was mainly thanks to Johnny Depp’s career-defining performance as Jack Sparrow, of course, but—slightly ropey CGI aside—the whole film holds up well as the 2000s answer to Raiders of the Lost Ark: fun, thrilling, great characters, and a tight and engaging story. The first two sequels are also very much worth watching (especially Dead Man’s Chest, which is my favorite entry in the entire franchise), though they are a little darker than the first one in parts. And stay away from the post-trilogy films (the fourth one is just about watchable if you’re invested in the franchise, but the fifth one is absolute garbage; as for the upcoming one, it may be excellent or it may be terrible, but I for one refuse to watch a POTC film that doesn’t include Johnny Depp).
  2. The Mask of Zorro (1998)
If your kids liked POTC, then they’ll love this one. A timeless, swashbuckling adventure that deserves better recognition than it gets; great acting, great action scenes, and an engaging storyline. Unmissable family fun that can be appreciated by anyone of any age.
  3. The Princess Bride (1987)
What more can be said? If your kids didn’t watch/read this classic, then you denied them a childhood.
  4. Back to the Future (1985)
Just an absolute classic. Every kid and young teen should see this. The sequels aren’t bad, either.
  5. Shrek (2001)
One of the best kids’ animated films ever made—hysterically funny, with great world-building and plot, and a clever deconstruction of classic fairytale tropes. Again, this one doesn’t have an age limit.
  6. Johnny English (2003)
A great one to start your kids on if you want to introduce them to Bond but they’re still a bit young, Johnny English is one of those timeless comedies that Rowan Atkinson excels at. It has all the Bond tropes but is a lot more toned down, with some hysterically funny moments along the way.

Final Thoughts

When choosing a movie, consider the children’s age and interests. Watching trailers or reading reviews to gauge appropriateness is also a good idea. These recommendations span a variety of genres, ensuring there’s something for every young viewer to enjoy.
